Slipping on the smooth stones of the ancient path, I imagined a caravan of mules laden with coal, their hooves echoing through the valley. This is the Jingxi Ancient Path, specifically the Jade River Stairway section, a testament to Beijing’s vibrant history. The Jingxi Ancient Path, a network of routes over 684 kilometers long, once pulsed with the lifeblood of trade, religion, and military strategy. It snaked through the western mountains, connecting Beijing to the western and northern regions, even reaching as far as Inner Mongolia. Today, we explore the Jade River section, a vital artery within this ancient network.

The Jade River Stairway, nestled within the Jingxi Ancient Path, dates back to at least the late Tang Dynasty. Its name originates from its passage through the heart of Yuhe County, established by Liu Rendgong, a regional military commander. Built between the mountain peaks, the path bears the deep grooves worn by countless carts carrying goods. The builders ingeniously placed stones every few steps, raising them slightly above the path. These stones stabilized the road, preventing slippage. They also slowed the carts, giving the animals a chance to rest on the inclines. The section from Shijingshan District’s Masha Village to Guanyin Village was once bustling with trade, earning the nickname “Thirteen Mile Commercial Street”. The route winds westward from the Stone Buddha Village area, passing through several villages before reaching Wangpingkou. The earliest section, from Masha Village to Dayu Village, has been lost to time and development. But from Dayu Village to Guanyin Village, particularly near the perilous Peak Pass section, the original path remains remarkably well-preserved.

This section, particularly Peak Pass, is a highlight of the Jingxi Ancient Path. The Peak Pass section boasts breathtaking views. It was once a strategic checkpoint in the Ming Dynasty’s defense of Beijing. Coal from nearby mines was a crucial commodity transported along this path. As we walk the same route, imagine the ceaseless flow of mules carrying their heavy loads to fuel the capital. The rhythmic clip-clop of their hooves on the stone path, the shouts of the drivers, the creak of the wooden carts – the air must have been thick with the dust and sounds of commerce. From Peak Pass, the path offered two choices: south towards Tanzhe Temple, or west through Huangshigang and Shizidao, leading towards Wangpingkou.

The Jingxi Ancient Path wasn’t just about trade. It also served as a route for religious pilgrimages. Temples and shrines dotted the landscape. During festival seasons, the path would teem with pilgrims, creating a vibrant tapestry of faith and tradition. Imagine the fervor of the crowds, the scent of incense mingling with the crisp mountain air. Picture their colorful banners fluttering in the wind as they made their way to sacred sites. Although time has taken its toll on some sections of the Jade River Stairway, and modern villages have encroached on others, the essence of its history persists. As we stand here, on the worn stones of the Jingxi Ancient Path, we can almost hear the echoes of the past.
