The Beijing-Shijiazhuang Expressway or Jingshi Expressway as it’s known. It’s one of China’s earliest high-speed roadways. Construction began in April 1986. It wasn’t completed until November 1993. A significant undertaking for its time. The entire length is approximately 270 kilometers. Linking Beijing to Shijiazhuang Hebei Province. It’s part of the larger Beijing-Hong Kong-Macau Expressway network. A crucial link connecting numerous cities. Beijing Tianjin Hebei among others.
Imagine the sheer scale of this project. In the early 1990s China was rapidly modernizing. This expressway was a symbol of that ambition. A tangible link between two major areas. The road’s construction involved various phases. Section by section it slowly took shape.
The Jingshi Expressway is a toll road. The Beijing and Hebei sections have separate toll systems. But there is a system of connected toll collection. The highway is mostly six lanes wide. There are some four-lane sections. Emergency stopping areas are situated every 500 meters. These are crucial for safety. Speed limits vary. 80-90 km/h within the fourth ring road. 120 km/h beyond.
The expressway has undergone several upgrades. Major roadworks took place in 2005 in the Beijing section. New exits were added like Zhangjia Village Road. Xidaokou and Jinjie Road. In 2012 the Hebei section underwent significant expansion. A project called “Four Changes and Eight Improvements”. This modernization improved its efficiency. Between 2013 and 2014 parts of the expressway were closed. Construction was underway for improvements.
The Hebei section’s upgrades finished in December 2014. The old section was renamed the New Yuan Expressway. However a part from Shijiazhuang North Toll Plaza to Shijiazhuang South Toll Plaza. This later became toll-free. It was renamed Fu Xing Street.
