“Oebashi” a name whispered through Osaka’s history. The Oebashi bridge stands before us. This bridge isn’t just steel and concrete. It is a crossing point through time.

Originally one of five bridges. These spanned the Dojima River. They were built during the Genroku period. This development transformed the Dojima city area.

The name Oebashi is steeped in history. It is said to come from a place name. A Manyo poet used it in a poem. Imagine poets immortalizing places.

In 1910, the Oebashi was modernized. An iron bridge replaced the old one. This coincided with the opening of a streetcar line. The city was embracing modernity.

Later the current bridge was renovated. This occurred alongside the Yodoyabashi Bridge project. A design competition was held. This was unusual for bridge renovations. Entries poured in from across the country.

Tatsuo Otani was chosen to lead the design. His vision created a four-span arch bridge. It stretched 81.5 meters long. It was 37 meters wide. The bridge featured a fulfilling upper deck. Its structure was steel-framed reinforced concrete.

Construction began in 1930. The Oebashi bridge was completed in 1935. Since then it has been renovated twice. Yet it remains almost exactly as it was. A testament to enduring design.

Look closely at the name plate. It was handwritten by Mayor Sekiichi. A personal touch adding to the bridge’s character.

The Oebashi links Nishitenma and Nakanoshima. You can easily access it from Yodoyabashi Station. Both the Midosuji Line and Keihan Line serve this station.

Consider the Oebashi. It is more than just a way to cross the river. It is a landmark. It represents Osaka’s journey. It is a blend of history and progress. A bridge connecting not just places. It also connects eras.
