Whispers of treachery and triumph echo around the Jiuduhe Town section of the Huanghuacheng Great Wall, specifically at the North 241 Enemy Tower. Here, at this very spot, the story of General Cai Kai unfolds. The Huanghuacheng Great Wall, a mere 75 km north of Beijing’s bustling center, is unique. It’s the only section of the Great Wall in Beijing graced by water, intertwining mountains, the tranquil Haoming Lake, and the steadfast ancient stonework. The Huanghuacheng Great Wall began its life in 1404. Its construction spanned an impressive 188 years, finally concluding in 1592. Its purpose? To protect emperors, both living and those who had passed into the afterlife. The Huanghuacheng Great Wall stands as a testament to the Ming Dynasty’s commitment to security. It formed part of the inner wall, linking Mutianyu to the east, Jiankou, and finally Juyong Pass in the west. But the Huanghuacheng Great Wall served a dual purpose. It also guarded the mausoleum of Emperor Yongle at Tianshou Hill, which later evolved into the Ming Tombs. Thus, this section of the wall holds the esteemed title of “the essence of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall”. Now, back to General Cai Kai. Tasked with overseeing the construction of this crucial section, Cai Kai demanded precision. Every brick, every stone, had to be perfectly placed. This meticulousness, however, led to delays. Rumors of shoddy workmanship reached Emperor Wanli, who, in a fit of rage, ordered Cai Kai’s execution. Only later did the truth surface. A survey revealed the Huanghuacheng Great Wall to be an impeccable fortress, a testament to Cai Kai’s unwavering dedication. Overwhelmed with remorse, the emperor commissioned a tomb and memorial stele in the general’s honor. He also etched the characters 金汤 (Jintang), meaning “metal soup” or “impregnable fortress,” onto a massive rock beneath the wall. This poignant tale is why Huanghuacheng also bears the name “Jintang Great Wall”. As you stand here, before North 241 Enemy Tower, imagine the weight of history, the echoes of construction, and the bittersweet victory of General Cai Kai, forever etched in stone and story.
