General Cai Kai’s unfortunate fate echoes around the Jiuduhe Town section of the Huanghuacheng Lakeside Great Wall. This magnificent structure, 75 km north of Beijing, isn’t just any wall. It’s the only “watery” section of the Great Wall in Beijing. Huanghuacheng Lakeside Great Wall uniquely combines the strength of mountains, the tranquility of lakes, and the historical weight of the ancient wall itself. The story goes that General Cai Kai oversaw the meticulous construction of this section. The emperor, swayed by malicious whispers, believed the work to be shoddy. He unjustly ordered Cai Kai’s execution. Later, a survey revealed the truth. The Huanghuacheng Lakeside Great Wall was a masterpiece of military engineering, solid and strategically brilliant. The emperor, filled with remorse, commissioned a tomb and memorial in the general’s honor. He even had the characters 金汤 (Jintang), meaning “metal soup” and symbolizing strength and solidity, carved into a massive rock beneath the wall. This section of the wall is sometimes referred to as the “Metal Soup Great Wall,” a testament to Cai Kai’s skill and a somber reminder of his unjust demise. The Huanghuacheng Lakeside Great Wall began its life in 1404. Its purpose was twofold: to protect the northern border and safeguard the Ming Tombs, the final resting place of emperors. This section stretches for 13 kilometers, winding through the landscape like a slumbering dragon. Here at Huanghuacheng Lakeside Great Wall, you’ll find a unique blend of restored sections, primarily built with large stone slabs, and wild, untouched portions. Three sections of the wall are even submerged in the water, creating an unparalleled view. This spot wasn’t always watery. The construction of the Xishuiyu Reservoir, later renamed Haoming Lake, raised the water level and created this stunning visual. Today, Haoming Lake is a vibrant ecosystem. Boating on the lake provides an unusual perspective of the wall snaking across the surrounding mountains. Keep an eye out for the mandarin ducks, as Huanghuacheng is known as their largest breeding ground in Beijing. In the summer, the hillsides explode with yellow wildflowers, giving Huanghuacheng its name, which means “Yellow Flower City”. Beyond the wall and lake, other attractions await. Explore Chengjisi Han Tomb, with its intricate carvings and historical significance. Hike up the nearby mountains, such as Mount Jiankou or Mutianyu Great Wall, for breathtaking panoramic views. As you stand here, at the Huanghuacheng Lakeside Great Wall, remember the story of General Cai Kai. Admire the beauty created through his dedication and sacrifice. Let the tranquility of the lake and the strength of the wall inspire you.
