After the reform and opening-up policy, Pinggu District’s Donggaocun Township saw a surge in musical instrument manufacturing. This laid the groundwork for what would eventually become the “China Music Valley” project, encompassing 乐谷小镇. The area became known for producing a wide array of instruments, from traditional Chinese ones to Western-style guitars and drums. In 2009, Donggaocun was producing nearly 300,000 guitars, capturing roughly 30% of the global market share. This earned them the title of “China’s Guitar Production Base,” awarded by the China Light Industry Association. The idea for “China Music Valley,” and therefore 乐谷小镇, gained traction thanks to this musical foundation. The project received immediate support from the Beijing Municipal Committee and the Beijing Municipal People’s Government. 乐谷小镇 is more than just factories though. It’s envisioned as a hub for all things music. The plans include a music industry zone focused on instrument design, manufacturing, and trade. There will be a music-themed education and entertainment zone with a museum and performance venues. A service area with commercial spaces, hotels, and a sports park is also in the works. Imagine a place where you can witness the creation of a guzheng, then attend a concert featuring the same instrument that evening. That is the dream of 乐谷小镇. It aims to combine everything from instrument production and trade to music education, performance, and cultural exchange, all in one location.
