“Lost,” a traveler muttered, unfolding a worn map near the Kamo River. “Utterly lost.” A kind-looking monk, noticing his plight, pointed towards a serene temple nestled amongst the trees. “Kushuonin,” he said gently. “Perhaps they can assist you.” Kushuonin, also called Myohoin, has stood as a beacon of peace in Kyoto since 725. It was established as a “bridge guardian temple” for the Yamazaki Bridge, ensuring its upkeep and offering solace to travelers. The temple’s origins are intertwined with the story of Gyoki, a monk who built the original Yamazaki Bridge. Kushuonin was tasked with both maintaining the bridge and providing spiritual guidance. Over the centuries, Kushuonin witnessed the ebb and flow of history, surviving fires and wars. A poignant tale speaks of a Toyotomi retainer who, during the turmoil of the early 17th century, set fire to Kushuonin before taking his own life. Miraculously, the principal image of Amida Nyorai, the Buddha of Infinite Light, was saved from the inferno. The current Kushuonin is a testament to resilience, rebuilt and restored, a quiet sanctuary in the bustling heart of Kyoto. Within its hallowed halls stands a five-foot statue of Amida Nyorai, a serene figure holding a golden bowl in one hand and a khakkhara staff in the other. This evocative image captures the Buddha in a state of meditative contemplation. The statue, crafted in 1702, is a remarkable feat of artistry, carved from red sandalwood and adorned with intricate details. Kushuonin is more than just a temple; it’s a repository of history, faith, and artistic expression. Its walls have witnessed centuries of human stories, from weary travelers seeking rest to devout monks offering prayers. A visit to Kushuonin is a journey through time, a chance to connect with the spiritual heart of Kyoto.
