Today we visit Kuboi Shrine. This shrine may not be as famous as some of Osaka’s larger shrines but it has a rich history. It is closely tied to the city’s past.

Kuboi Shrine’s origins trace back to Prince Shotoku. He established Shitennoji Temple. Kuboi Shrine was built as one of the Shitennoji Shichimiya or Seven Shrines of Shitennoji. These shrines protected the temple.

The name Kuboi comes from the place name. The area used to be called Kuba. Kuboi Shrine was the local guardian of Kuba Village.

Walking through the torii gate you will find guardian dogs. Look closely at the bronze komainu that stand before you. These dogs were donated in Showa 10 or 1935. Ito Hokai created the original model. Ito Chuzo factory cast them. These dogs stand proudly guarding the shrine.

Kuboi Shrine also has smaller sub-shrines. These include Hōsasō Shrine and Hakuryū Shrine. A stone dog statue also guards this shrine.

In Meiji 40 or 1907 Kuboi Shrine merged with two other local shrines. These were Inari Shrine and Kumano Grand Shrine. Today Kuboi Shrine enshrines Amaterasu Omikami. It also enshrines Hayatamao no Mikoto, Izanagi no Mikoto, Izanami no Mikoto and Ugamitama no Kami.

Kuboi Shrine’s history reflects Osaka’s development. It began as a village shrine. It then became part of a major temple complex. Today it continues to be a place of worship and local community.

The shrine holds its annual summer festival on July 15th and 16th. Its autumn festival also occurs on October 15th and 16th. These festivals are important events for the local community. They offer a glimpse into the shrine’s traditions.

Take a moment to appreciate the details around you. The bronze guardian dogs the sub-shrines and the peaceful atmosphere. Kuboi Shrine offers a unique perspective on Osaka’s religious history. It is a place where the past and present meet.
