“A church named after barbarians?” you might ask. Right here in Kyoto, in the heart of ancient Japan, once stood the Nanbanji, a place as intriguing as its nickname suggests. Now, only a simple stone monument marks the spot where the Nanbanji once stood. But imagine, if you will, a grand, three-story wooden structure, resembling a Japanese castle more than a traditional church. This was the Nanbanji, built in 1576 with the permission of the powerful warlord Oda Nobunaga. The name ‘Nanbanji’ itself tells a story. ‘Nanban’, meaning “southern barbarians,” was the term used for Europeans arriving in Japan during the 16th century. These “barbarians” brought with them new ideas, technologies like firearms, and a new religion – Christianity. The Nanbanji, therefore, became a symbol of this cultural exchange, a fusion of East and West. Sadly, the church’s existence was short-lived. The winds of change in Japan led to the expulsion of missionaries and the suppression of Christianity. The Nanbanji, caught in this religious and political turmoil, vanished from the historical stage just a few years after its construction. Though lost to time, the memory of the Nanbanji serves as a reminder of a fascinating period in Japanese history. It’s a testament to the enduring power of cultural exchange, even when cut short by the tides of history.
