Carved into the memory of Osaka, the Nakajima Great Waterway Stele stands as a testament to human endeavor. This unassuming monument, right here before us, tells a tale of farmers battling floods, corrupt officials, and the sheer will to survive. The Nakajima Great Waterway, completed in 1678, was a monumental undertaking. Imagine 22 villages pooling their resources, not for profit, but for survival. Their fields, trapped between the Yodo, Kanzaki, and Nakasu Rivers, were constantly inundated. They needed a way to drain the stagnant water and prevent devastating floods. Appeals to the shogunate fell on deaf ears. Forced to take matters into their own hands, these farmers embarked on a back-breaking project. They dug a 9.5km canal, averaging 22 meters wide, in just 50 days. The Nakajima Great Waterway Stele commemorates this feat, but it also whispers of a darker side. The story goes that three village heads, shouldering the burden of their people, defied the shogunate and committed suicide to protest the lack of support. Their sacrifice underscores the desperation of the situation and the lengths these farmers went to protect their livelihoods. Today, the Nakajima Great Waterway’s original path is largely obscured. Some sections have been incorporated into roads or buildings, making it hard to trace its course. However, standing here at this stele, we can almost hear the echoes of their shovels striking the earth, the murmur of their hopes, and the silent tribute to their sacrifice. The Nakajima Great Waterway Stele is more than just a stone. It’s a window into Osaka’s past, reminding us of the power of community, the resilience of the human spirit, and the lasting impact of a waterway carved not just through the earth, but through history itself.
