Tucked away in the serene landscapes of Ikaruga, Nara Prefecture, rests the remarkable Chūgū-ji. This ancient Buddhist temple, often overshadowed by its grand neighbor, Hōryū-ji, holds a captivating history waiting to be unveiled. Chūgū-ji’s story begins not as a temple, but as a palace. It served as the residence of Princess Hashihito no Anahobe, mother of the revered Prince Shōtoku. Upon her passing, her son transformed this place of mourning into a sanctuary of devotion, thus birthing Chūgū-ji. Initially situated about 500 meters east of its current location, the temple was later relocated during the Muromachi period. Chūgū-ji stands as a testament to female leadership in Buddhist monasticism. It’s one of three nunneries in Yamato led by imperial princesses, reflecting a unique blend of royal and religious authority. Within Chūgū-ji’s sacred halls reside two extraordinary National Treasures. The first is the exquisite wooden statue of Miroku Bosatsu, a captivating sculpture dating back to the Asuka period. Once adorned with vibrant colors, the statue now boasts a rich lacquer finish, a testament to the passage of time and evolving artistic sensibilities. The second treasure is the breathtaking Tenjukoku Shūchō Mandala, a vibrant tapestry commissioned by Prince Shōtoku’s consort, Tachibana no Oiratsume, after his death in 622. This intricate embroidery depicts the splendor of heaven and the promise of eternal life. Restored during the Edo period using surviving fragments and a Kamakura-era replica, the mandala serves as a powerful symbol of devotion and remembrance. The original site of Chūgū-ji, marked by earthen platforms and remnants of foundations, has been designated a National Historic Site. These ruins offer a glimpse into the temple’s early layout, revealing a design similar to Shitennō-ji in Osaka, with the Main Hall and pagoda positioned in close proximity. Chūgū-ji, with its captivating blend of royal heritage, artistic brilliance, and spiritual significance, stands as a hidden gem in Nara’s landscape.
