Beneath our feet lies a testament to Chinese ingenuity. Today we explore 中华第一条铁路涵洞. It is a part of China’s first railway designed and built by Chinese engineers.
The Beijing-Zhangjiakou Railway also called Jingzhang Railway represents a pivotal moment. It showcases China’s growing independence in the early 20th century. Imagine a time when foreign powers dominated railway construction in China. The Qing government wanted to carry out a national reform through a variety of measures. Railway construction was considered a top priority.
This railway defied expectations. It was entirely conceived and constructed by Chinese minds. The 中华第一条铁路涵洞 and the railway stand as a symbol of national pride.
The railway’s construction from 1905 to 1909 was initiated by Viceroy Yuan Shikai. Hu Yufen was his Assistant Director-General. Zhan Tianyou served as the chief engineer. Zhan was a visionary. He ingeniously shortened the Badaling Tunnel. He employed a switchback track resembling the Chinese character 人. This means people. It cleverly navigated the challenging terrain. Vertical shafts were used to speed up tunnel excavation.
The 中华第一条铁路涵洞 played a crucial role. It facilitated transportation through mountainous regions. The completed railway spanned 201.2 kilometers. It connected Beijing and Zhangjiakou. The route included 14 stations 4 tunnels and 125 bridges.
Later in 1916 the railway merged into the Beijing-Suiyuan Railway. Later it became part of the Beijing-Baotou Railway after the founding of the PRC. Sections within Beijing were dismantled to ease urban traffic.
In 1995 the former Xizhimen Station gained recognition. It became a Major Historical and Cultural Site of Beijing. In 2013 the Nankou-Badaling section was similarly honored. It became a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level.
Before construction began Japanese merchant Amemiya Keijirou and Kinder recommended foreign machinery. They also suggested foreign contractors to Zhan Tianyou. Zhan remained firm. He insisted on an all-Chinese team. To accelerate construction workers worked in shifts. Air was brought into the tunnel with fans.
Several tunnels mark the route’s ingenuity. The Juyongguan Tunnel was completed in 1908. Shortly after the Badaling Tunnel followed. These feats showcase the determination to overcome natural obstacles.
The railway opened in 1909. The actual total cost of the railway was less than expected. It also marked the lowest cost of all railways in China. More importantly the Beijing–Zhangjiakou Railway was Qing Dynasty’s first and only railway that had been designed built and managed solely by Chinese.
Today the 中华第一条铁路涵洞 stands as a reminder. It marks the dawn of China’s railway engineering prowess. It embodies self-reliance and innovation. As we conclude remember the spirit. It fueled the creation of this landmark. It connects us to a legacy of Chinese achievement.
