Beneath our feet lies a story etched in concrete and steel. This is the story of Dongzhimen Bridge. It is more than just a structure. It is a vital artery in Beijing’s bustling heart.

Let’s delve into the history of this iconic interchange. Dongzhimen Bridge stands in the Dongcheng District. It is located at the original site of Dongzhimen. This bridge is a crucial part of Beijing’s Second Ring Road. Its bridge deck covers a total area of 2215 square meters.

The Beijing Municipal City Municipal Engineering Design Institute designed the bridge. The project was constructed by the engineering corps. Construction began in early 1979. It was completed in July 1980. The bridge was finally put into use in 1981.

Dongzhimen Bridge facilitates traffic between Dongzhimen North Street and Dongzhimen South Street. These streets run north and south along the Second Ring Road. It also connects Dongzhimen Outer Street and Dongzhimen Inner Street. These run east and west.

The bridge features a unique cloverleaf interchange design. The Second Ring Road runs underneath. The auxiliary roads of the Second Ring Road and Dongzhimen Inner and Outer Streets are above. They are connected by a roundabout. The center of the roundabout is open. This allows you to see the road below.

An interesting addition occurred on July 31 2008. A sculpture of Baron Von Richthofen was added to the west side of the Dongzhimen Bridge roundabout.

Dongzhimen Bridge is not just a way to get from one place to another. It represents Beijing’s continuous development. It symbolizes the city’s blend of old and new. The bridge ensures smooth traffic flow. It also serves as a reminder of Beijing’s commitment to progress.

As you stand here take a moment to appreciate Dongzhimen Bridge. Think about the countless journeys it has supported. Consider the history beneath your feet. This bridge is a testament to Beijing’s ever-evolving story.
