“How can you know the path of sincerity when your heart is so far from it?” These words once echoed near Seikanji Temple. This Kyoto temple holds a tale of tragic love and spiritual awakening. Let’s explore Seikanji Temple a hidden gem southwest of Kiyomizu Temple.

Seikanji Temple belongs to the Shingi Shingon sect. It is a branch of Chishakuin Temple. The ancient temple whispers a story from “The Tale of the Heike.” It tells of Emperor Takakura and Shogyochikyoku’s love.

The moss garden holds a special stone. It is called the “stone of the city of Kyoto.” From there Kyoto unfolds like a fan. It is believed wishes made upon this keystone come true.

During the Edo period the area teemed with travelers. Tea stores lined the path to Otsu. Today Seikanji Temple remains peaceful. It is a quiet contrast to the busier Kiyomizu-dera.

A small path connects Seikanji Temple and Kiyomizu-dera. It is known as “Uta no Nakayama”. This path holds a unique story. A monk named Shin-en encountered a beautiful woman at dusk. He was captivated but speechless. He simply asked how to reach Kiyomizu-dera Temple. The woman replied with a poem. It questioned his sincerity on the path to enlightenment.

Her words struck Shin-en deeply. Ashamed he realized his training was insufficient. He devoted himself to studying the sutras. This encounter gave the path its name “Utano-no-Nakayama”. It means “middle mountain of poetry.” Many poets have since been inspired by this place. The path appears in the noh songs “Yutsu” and “Tamura.”

Imagine walking this ancient road today. You might hear only the rustling leaves. A stone monument marks “Seikan-ji Temple in the middle of a song mountain.” Some claim to have seen a woman in old-fashioned clothes walking towards Kiyomizu-dera. The story of Shin-en might then echo in your mind.

The woman’s poem speaks to a deeper truth. It’s a reminder to examine our own intentions. As you leave Seikanji Temple consider the path of sincerity. Ask yourself if your heart is truly on the path.
