Whispers of vengeful spirits and scholarly reverence mingle here at the Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. This shrine, dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, holds a captivating tale. Michizane, a scholar and politician, was unjustly exiled by his rivals. After his death in exile, disasters plagued Kyoto. These were attributed to Michizane’s wrath. Kitano Tenmangu Shrine was built to appease his restless spirit. He became associated with Tenjin, the Shinto god of education. Students flock to Kitano Tenmangu, seeking success in their studies. Kitano Tenmangu is more than just a place for academic prayers. The shrine grounds boast a remarkable collection of nearly 2000 plum trees. These bloom beautifully between February and March. Michizane loved plum trees. A single plum tree, the tobiume, or “flying plum tree,” is said to have followed him into exile. Every Tenmangu shrine features a plum tree in front of its offering hall. On February 25th, a special tea ceremony, the Baikasai, takes place in the plum grove. Maiko and geiko from the nearby Kamishichiken geiko district grace the event. During autumn, Kitano Tenmangu transforms into a vibrant spectacle of color. Hundreds of maple trees in the shrine’s garden blaze with fiery hues. The garden is open to the public during this peak season, from late October to early December. Evenings bring an enchanting illumination of the maple trees. The 25th of each month sees a bustling flea market on the shrine grounds and surrounding streets. Hundreds of vendors offer a diverse array of goods. Plants, antiques, tools, toys, and crafts fill the stalls. The air is filled with the tempting aromas of festival food. Yakisoba, karaage, and takoyaki are just a few of the treats available. Kitano Tenmangu Shrine is a place of captivating contrasts. Scholarly tranquility meets vibrant festivals. The whispers of history intertwine with the laughter of market-goers. Remember the story of Michizane’s exile and the shrine’s dedication to appeasing his spirit as you explore the grounds.
