“A bridge can be more than just a way to cross a river,” Old Man Li said, his eyes twinkling as he gestured towards the 上洞小橋. “It can be a link to the past, a symbol of hope, a stage for stories waiting to be told.” The 上洞小橋, nestled amongst blossoming plum trees, is more than just a picturesque scene. It’s a testament to human ingenuity and a quiet observer of history. Our story begins in 2025, during the Year of the Snake. The village chief of 問花村, Yang Renji, had a vision. He wanted to reconnect the village with its legendary past, specifically the tale of Bai Suzhen, one of the most famous snake spirits in Chinese history. He envisioned a new landmark that would intertwine the natural beauty of Qingcheng Mountain with the romance of the Legend of the White Snake. Inspired by the “Broken Bridge Remnant Snow” scene from the legend, a famous view in Hangzhou, Yang Renji sought to recreate the magic here in 都江堰. There was one problem: it was spring. Snow was out of the question. But Yang Renji was resourceful. Along the banks of the stream flowing beneath the 上洞小橋, he planted dozens of rare plum trees, a variety known as “Remnant Snow”. These plum trees, with their delicate white blossoms, would mimic the appearance of snow. As the trees bloomed, their white petals drifted onto the stone surface of the 上洞小橋. The effect was breathtaking. From one angle, the bridge appeared covered in a blanket of fresh snow, much like the Broken Bridge in Hangzhou. From another, the bare stone of the bridge contrasted beautifully with the delicate white blossoms. The 上洞小橋, transformed by these “Remnant Snow” plum blossoms, quickly gained fame, drawing visitors from across the country. Tourists, dressed as Bai Suzhen, Xu Xian, and Xiaoqing, posed on the bridge, reenacting scenes from the beloved legend. They strolled across the 上洞小橋, holding oil-paper umbrellas, their laughter echoing through the blossoming plum trees. They had, in a sense, stepped back in time, reliving a timeless love story. The 上洞小橋 became a living bridge between the past and the present, a place where legend and reality intertwined.
