“Is this really the place?” I hear you ask. It may seem small but this is the 三郷橋稲荷大神, or Sango bashi Inari Okami. This little shrine holds more history than meets the eye.

Welcome to the 三郷橋稲荷大神. It is a Shinto shrine tucked away in Osaka’s Higashinari-ku. While its origins are unclear, this small shrine is more than just a place of worship. It is a window into Osaka’s past.

Here, at the corner of this shrine, stands a stone monument. It marks the site of a fierce battle during the Osaka Winter Siege. Imagine this quiet neighborhood transformed into a battlefield. In 1614, the troops of Toyotomi and Tokugawa clashed here. 佐竹義宣 and 上杉景勝 fought against 木村重成 and 後藤基次. It was a brutal conflict. This monument at the 三郷橋稲荷大神 reminds us of that battle.

But the 三郷橋稲荷大神 has more secrets to share. During bridge construction in 1917, a dugout canoe was unearthed nearby. This ancient boat dates back to the Kofun and Nara periods. It suggests that people used waterways for transportation. The dugout was found near the 三郷橋. The shrine’s name 三郷橋稲荷大神 might come from that bridge.

The ancient boat was once displayed at Osaka Castle. Sadly, it was destroyed during an air raid in 1945.

Look closer at the 三郷橋稲荷大神. You will see three deities are enshrined here. They are 白清大明神、岩国大明神 and 福丸大明神. The shrine may be a collective name for these three pillars.

The handwritten feel of the shrine adds to its charm. Small birdhouses adorn the eaves. Fox statues stand guard, as foxes are messengers of the deity Inari.

So, while the 三郷橋稲荷大神 may be small. It connects us to Osaka’s history. Battles were fought here. Ancient boats were discovered here. This humble shrine is a reminder of the past. Take a moment to appreciate the stories. Imagine the echoes of battles and the spirits of those who came before us.
