Slipping beneath the Nishi-Sansō Bridge, a hidden waterway whispers secrets of Osaka’s past. Nishi-Sansō Bridge isn’t just a bridge. It’s a testament to a naming squabble, a tribute to a forgotten waterway, and a delightful spot for a stroll. Completed in 1929, the Nishi-Sansō Bridge originally served as a movable weir on the Dōjima River. Its purpose was river purification, a noble goal that unfortunately fell by the wayside. By 1982, the bridge had seen better days. Renovations breathed new life into the structure. The result is the elegant bridge we see today, a harmonious blend of a main arch and nine smaller arches.
The name “Nishi-Sansō” itself is a story. When the nearby Nishi-Sansō Station opened in 1975, the bridge’s name became a point of contention. Kintetsu Railway initially wanted to name the station “Matsuhita,” after the nearby Matsushita Electric Industrial factory. However, both Kadoma City and Moriguchi City, which share the station, rejected this proposal. Kadoma City suggested “Nishi-Kadoma,” while Moriguchi City proposed “Higashi-Moriguchi” or “Kyōbashi.” Kintetsu, in a final attempt at compromise, offered “Kyōbashi-Honmachi.” This also failed. Finally, Kintetsu unilaterally decided on “Nishi-Sansō,” after the Nishi-Sansō irrigation canal that flowed beneath the new station.
The choice perplexed locals, as the canal’s name wasn’t widely known. This confusion led some to mistakenly believe “Nishi-Sansō” referred to a villa belonging to the renowned haiku poet Matsuo Bashō. The reality is far more intriguing. The name derives from three ancient villages: Kadoma, Kyūhōji, and Gobejō. These villages maintained orchards, and the canal, flowing west of these orchards, became known as “Nishi-Sansō,” literally “West of the Three Orchards.” So, the next time you find yourself at Nishi-Sansō Bridge, take a moment to appreciate its quiet elegance and the echoes of history it carries.
