“Three Houses,” they called it. Does that sound like the entrance to a cave? Yet, here we stand before the area known as Sanjianfang. It holds stories far deeper than its simple name suggests.

Sanjianfang, or the 三尖洞, wasn’t always what it is today. Its history is layered like the very earth beneath our feet. Imagine workshops bustling with activity. Markets teeming with goods. This was Sanjiafang which means “Three Families Workshops”. This happened near the end of the Ming Dynasty.

The name evolved. Sanjiafang became Sanjianfang. The area transformed. It grew into a vital part of Beijing. The name 三尖洞, while seemingly referring to a cave entrance, actually represents a significant area.

Let’s delve into Sanjianfang’s past. In 1949, this area was part of Daxing County. It also belonged to the 8th District of Tong County. By 1958, Sanjianfang became part of the People’s Commune of Shuangqiao. This was within the Chaoyang District. A significant shift occurred in 1971. The area was established as the Sanjianfang Production Team. Later, in 1984, it was reorganized into a township. Sanjianfang gained area status while retaining its township status in 2003.

Today, Sanjianfang is divided into subdivisions. There are communities. There are also villages. In 2021, there were 15 communities and 11 villages.

Consider the area’s growth. In 2020, the population was 109,672. This means a density of 12,000 people per square kilometer. Sanjianfang spans 8.8 square kilometers.

Now, think about the name 三尖洞, “Three Houses”. It belies the complex history. It masks the area’s evolution from workshops to a modern township. It hints at the families who shaped its identity.

The story of Sanjianfang is a microcosm of Beijing’s own journey. From ancient origins to a modern metropolis. It showcases how names and places evolve. They carry echoes of the past. As we explore, remember the “Three Houses”. Remember the workshops. Remember the people who built Sanjianfang. Their legacy lives on in this vibrant area of Beijing.
