The komahato, the guardian pigeons of Miyake Hachimangu Shrine, stand proudly at the entrance, welcoming visitors with their serene gaze. This shrine, nestled in the lush greenery of northeast Kyoto, holds a special place in the hearts of locals and tourists alike.

Miyake Hachimangu is dedicated to Hachiman, the god of war and protector of the country. Hachiman is revered as the guardian deity of children, protecting them from childhood illnesses and night crying.

Legend has it that the shrine was established in the 7th century after Ono no Imoko, a renowned ambassador, recovered from a serious illness after praying to the Usa Hachiman Shrine in Kyushu. Ono no Imoko was dispatched by Prince Shotoku, the regent of Empress Suiko, as an envoy to the Sui dynasty court in China. After his mission, Ono no Imoko settled near the current site of Miyake Hachiman Shrine and built a small temple in gratitude.

The shrine is known for its abundance of pigeons. The temple grounds are adorned with pigeon imagery, from stone lanterns to clay pigeons. Visitors can purchase a bowl of oats for 50 yen and feed the real pigeons that roam freely.

Miyake Hachimangu Shrine is a testament to the enduring power of faith and the enduring love for children. Step inside and experience the peaceful serenity of this ancient sanctuary.
