“Why is this shrine known as ‘Mushi-hachiman’?” Right here, at the Miyake Hachimangū Shrine, a fascinating story unfolds. This shrine, tucked away in Kyoto’s Sakyo-ku, plays a significant role in the lives of many Japanese families. It’s a beacon of hope, a place where they come to pray for the well-being of their children. Miyake Hachimangū is known for its unique ability to alleviate children’s ailments. Worried parents flock here to seek divine intervention against baby colic, pray for their children’s academic success, and even ask for safe childbirth. This focus on children’s health earned the shrine the nickname ‘Mushi-hachiman’, meaning ‘Insect Hachiman’. This is because people believed parasitic worms, insects, or ‘Mushi’ caused baby colic. To counter these ailments, the shrine was believed to possess the power to expel ‘Mushi’. The shrine’s history stretches back to the 9th century, with its founding linked to Ono no Imoko. A renowned diplomat, Ono no Imoko traveled to the Sui court in China during the reign of Empress Suiko. During his travels, he fell ill in the Chikushi region and desperately prayed at Usa Hachimangū for recovery. His prayers were answered, and he completed his diplomatic mission. In gratitude, Ono no Imoko built Miyake Hachimangū on his land as a heartfelt thank you to Hachiman, the deity of Usa Hachimangū. Interestingly, the shrine became known for a special reason. Extensive excavations have uncovered numerous large ‘Ema’ – wooden votive plaques offered by worshippers. These plaques depict scenes of groups of children, showcasing a unique worship practice centered around expelling ‘Mushi’. This tradition, where entire groups of children were brought to the shrine instead of individual families, demonstrates the community aspect of faith and the deep-rooted belief in the shrine’s protective power. These ‘Ema’ are now designated as National Folk Cultural Properties, reflecting their importance as historical artifacts and testaments to the shrine’s enduring impact on Japanese culture. As you wander through Miyake Hachimangū, remember the countless hopes and prayers woven into its very fabric. This shrine, more than just a historical landmark, is a testament to the enduring power of faith and community in Japan.
