A hushed reverence hangs in the air. This is Sanko Shrine. Its history whispers from the very stones beneath our feet.

Sanko Shrine sits on Mount Sanada in Osaka’s Tennoji-ku. It’s a Shinto shrine dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto and Susanoo-no-Mikoto. Legend links it to a legendary tunnel used during the 17th-century Siege of Osaka. The shrine itself claims origins in the 5th century. It was once called Himeyama Shrine. It is now better known as the Sanko Shrine of Mount Sanada. The current head priest is the 86th in a long lineage.

The shrine grounds hold a statue of Sanada Yukimura. He was a prominent figure in the Siege of Osaka. The statue stands as a reminder of the Sanada Maru. This was a fortification defended by the Toyotomi clan. A tunnel opening the Sanada-no Nuke-ana is also here. It is said to have connected the Sanada Maru to Osaka Castle. The number of visitors has risen sharply since the 2016 NHK taiga drama Sanada Maru. But recent research suggests the Sanada Maru was actually further away. The tunnel here might be a trench dug by attacking forces. Not the legendary passage.

Every June Sanko Shrine hosts the Chubu-yoke festival. It’s a week-long event to ward off the ill effects of stroke. A two-meter-high grass ring is erected. Worshippers step through it praying for health and longevity. The shrine also houses a subordinate shrine to Takeshiuchi Sukune. He is one of Osaka’s seven gods of good fortune. He is worshipped as the Shinto god of wealth and longevity.

A small shopping street called Tamatsukuri Yukimura Road leads to the shrine. It starts at Tamatsukuri Station. The station is easily accessible by JR West’s Osaka Loop Line and the Osaka subway’s Nagahori Tsurumi-ryokuchi Line.

Sanko Shrine. A place where history and legend intertwine. A place of quiet beauty and profound spiritual significance. A place you will not soon forget.
