“Sacred guardian.” That’s what the name 三代王神社 essentially means for the locals. The 三代王神社 stands as a testament to Chiba’s rich history. It reflects the enduring traditions of its people.

This shrine’s story dates back to 1202. Chiba Tsunetane’s third son, Takashige, built it. Takashige governed this area. He dedicated the 三代王神社 to the guardian deity of the Takeishi clan. This clan was influential in the Shimosa Province.

The main deity enshrined here is Amenotaneko. He is revered as an ancestor of the Nakatomi and Fujiwara clans. Legend says Amenotaneko served Emperor Jimmu. He recited praises to the heavens after Jimmu’s enthronement. He also expiated celestial and earthly sins.

Originally named Takeishi Myojin, the shrine’s name changed in 1796. It became known as 三代王神社. The shrine participates in the Shimosan Miyama’s Seven-Year Festival. It is a significant regional event. Nine shrines gather at Nimiya Shrine in Funabashi City for this festival. The festival occurs in the years of the Ox and Sheep.

During the festival, the deity palanquins gather at a sacred site. This site is in Miyama. Priests and clan members then carry the palanquins uphill. They offer prayers together. 三代王神社 also participates in the “Send-off Ritual” after the prayers.

Within the grounds of 三代王神社, you’ll find several smaller shrines. These include Kanayamahiko Shrine and Hachisaka Shrine. Also, there are Mitama Shrine and Kosaki Shrine. These various shrines add to the spiritual tapestry of the site.

Note the main hall. It was renovated in 1978. The foundation work and roof replacement modernized the structure. Even today, some parts are covered with sheets due to damage.

The shrine’s grounds feature stone steps. These steps ascend the hill. Ancient and unusual trees line the path. Sunlight filters through the trees. It creates an ethereal atmosphere.

The hand-washing basin features unique spouts. If you manipulate the left-hand water pipe, water flows vigorously. One can purify before entering the shrine.

The shrine’s semi-unmanned status gives it a special charm. A priest visits a few times a week. He cleans and maintains the grounds. If you’re lucky, you might meet him. He sometimes changes into priestly robes before presenting a stamp.

Despite its modest size, the 三代王神社 exudes a sense of tranquility. It offers a peaceful escape. It is away from the city. It is a place where you can feel the good energy. Spend time reflecting.
