Did Madenokōji Fujifusa truly vanish into thin air? This memorial, dedicated to Madenokōji Fujifusa, whispers of his enigmatic fate. Madenokōji Fujifusa served as a court noble during the late Kamakura and early Northern and Southern Dynasties periods. He was the son of Madenokōji Sanefusa, a close associate of Emperor Go-Daigo. Fujifusa himself rose through the court ranks, eventually becoming Chunagon, or Middle Counselor. He was deeply involved in the political turmoil of his time. In 1331, he participated in Emperor Go-Daigo’s failed attempt to overthrow the Kamakura shogunate, an event known as the Genkō War. Following the emperor into exile at Mount Kasagi, Fujifusa was captured. He was later exiled to Shimosa Province. Upon Emperor Go-Daigo’s return to power and the establishment of the Kenmu Restoration, Fujifusa was pardoned. He served in key roles within the new government. He was even head of the Onshōgata, a department responsible for rewards and punishments. However, he remonstrated with the emperor against what he saw as unfair practices in the distribution of rewards. Then, in 1334, he abruptly left his post and disappeared without a trace. Some accounts suggest he retired to a life of religious seclusion. Others whisper of a more tragic end. The memorial before us, the 万里小路中納言藤房, serves as a quiet testament to this man. It speaks to his service, his loyalty, and his ultimate mystery. What truly happened to Madenokōji Fujifusa? We may never know. His story, like so many others lost to time, remains shrouded in the mists of history. But here, at this memorial, we can pause and reflect. We can ponder the life of a man caught in the currents of a turbulent era. A man who, despite his prominent position, chose to vanish, leaving behind only whispers and questions.
