What if I told you there’s a place called Yixiantian where the sky shrinks to a sliver? Yixiantian, or “一线天” in Chinese characters, translates to “a line of sky”. Located in Pinggu District about 120 kilometers from downtown Beijing, Yixiantian is a hidden gem nestled between the Bolitai and Zhangjiajie areas. This narrow crevice in the mountainside seems almost impossible to pass through. From afar, it looks like a thin line etched into the rock face. But as you approach Yixiantian, you’ll discover it’s wide enough to walk through. Stepping into this natural wonder is an experience like no other. The towering cliffs close in around you. You’ll find yourself gazing up at a ribbon of blue, a single line of sky. The air within Yixiantian is cool and damp. It feels like stepping into a narrow, natural refrigerator. A local legend attributes Yixiantian’s creation to the Ming Dynasty’s Hongwu Emperor, Zhu Yuanzhang. As the story goes, he was inspecting the construction of the Great Wall. His path was blocked by a mountain, so in a moment of impatience, he drew his sword and sliced through the rock, creating the narrow chasm we see today. The entrance to Yixiantian is near the Bolitai amusement park. Follow the small road uphill, past strange and imposing rock formations. You’ll see a sign pointing the way to Yixiantian and Tianzigu. A leisurely ten-minute walk will bring you to this natural marvel. After experiencing the unique environment of Yixiantian, consider continuing your climb to the small pavilion at the mountain’s summit for a breathtaking view. Yixiantian offers a unique blend of natural beauty and intriguing lore. It’s a worthwhile adventure for anyone seeking to escape the bustle of Beijing and connect with the wonders of nature.
