This temple, often called Ikkyuji, is intrinsically linked with the famed Zen master. Ikkyu Sojun, a figure shrouded in equal parts reverence and rumor. Born in Kyoto in 1394, his life was a whirlwind of poetry, Zen philosophy, and audacious acts that challenged the rigid traditions of his time. Ikkyu revived this temple, originally known as Shuon’an, in 1456. He spent his later years here, his spirit seemingly woven into the very fabric of the place.
