Gazing up at the towering bronze-plated roof, one can’t help but feel the weight of history surrounding Osaka Cathedral, or as it’s locally known, カトリック仁川教会. This grand cathedral, known formally as St. Mary’s Cathedral, stands as a testament to resilience and faith. Originally built in 1894 as St. Agnes Church, the structure met a tragic end during wartime air raids. Yet, like a phoenix from the ashes, it was reborn in 1963 as the magnificent Osaka Cathedral. The expansive floor, covering 2,450 square meters, gives a sense of the cathedral’s grandeur. The soaring eaves, reaching 20 meters high, amplify this feeling. Inside, approximately 100 stained glass windows, crafted by Kohshu Habuchi of the Venice studios, bathe the interior in a kaleidoscope of colors. These windows depict scenes from the lives of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary, adding a layer of spiritual artistry to the space. The late artist Insho Domoto, a member of the Japanese Art Academy, graced the cathedral with his magnificent murals. These striking works, located behind the altar and on the side walls, add another dimension to the cathedral’s artistic richness. Look closely, and you’ll discover depictions of the Holy Family dressed in traditional kimonos, a unique blend of Eastern and Western cultures. Even the pipe organ, with its impressive 2,400 pipes, contributes to the cathedral’s artistic and spiritual atmosphere. Outside, in the square facing the cathedral, stand stone statues of Blessed Justo Takayama Ukon and Mrs. Hosokawa Gracia, created by Catholic sculptor Masayoshi Abe. These statues commemorate two significant figures in Japanese Christian history, adding another layer of historical depth to カトリック仁川教会. Their presence serves as a reminder of the trials and triumphs of faith in Japan.
