Ever imagine a shopping mall evolving like a Pokemon? Right here, at イオンスタイル新茨木 (ÆON STYLE SHIN-IBARAKI), that’s exactly what happened. This isn’t just any mall. It’s a testament to changing times and shifting consumer desires. Originally, this spot housed the Jusco Ibaraki store, opening in 1965. In 1986, it reinvented itself as the larger Jusco Shin-Ibaraki, anchoring the Ibaraki Shopping Town. The old Jusco site transformed into a parking lot, showing how adaptable spaces can be.

This new shopping complex, built on the site of its predecessor, wasn’t just bigger. It aimed higher. It sought to be an island of treasures, a departure from the traditional Jusco experience. They incorporated new concepts, better layouts, and enhanced services. The goal was a more premium, customer-focused shopping experience. They looked at existing General Merchandise Stores (GMS) and decided to do things differently. This move reflects a broader trend in retail, adapting to changing consumer expectations. The early manager, Motomichi Sawada, was instrumental in this transformation. He later became a representative director at ÆON.

Fast forward to 2011. The entire mall underwent a major refresh. Twenty-five years after its grand opening, it reopened with renewed vigor. Another six years later, in 2017, another transformation occurred. The name officially changed to ÆON STYLE SHIN-IBARAKI. It became Kansai’s first Grand Generation (G.G.) store, focusing on adult shoppers. This meant phasing out toys and children’s clothing, showing a shift in target demographics.

Nearby, the ÆON Mall Ibaraki provides a contrasting shopping experience. This large mall, formerly Mycal Ibaraki, is located in front of JR Ibaraki Station. It demonstrates the diverse retail landscape in the area. Even the surrounding area has been revamped over the years. ÆON STYLE SHIN-IBARAKI’s influence extends beyond its walls, impacting the neighborhood’s development. The building itself, with its three floors, is a dynamic space. From food and daily goods on the first floor, to women’s and men’s fashion and a pharmacy on the second, and relaxation spaces and a teahouse on the third, it offers something for everyone. The second and third floors also host events and have a play area, adding to the mall’s community feel. The mall’s operating hours vary depending on the area and tenant, extending to as late as 11 p.m.

Today, as you stand before ÆON STYLE SHIN-IBARAKI, you see more than a shopping mall. You see a story of evolution. A story of adaptation. A testament to the constant drive to meet the ever-changing needs of the community it serves.
