“Moon rock in Osaka?” It might sound like science fiction but it was a reality at the U.S. Pavilion during Expo ’70. This is the story of the Amerika-kan. The Amerika-kan. also known as the U.S. Pavilion at Expo ’70, was an architectural marvel. It showcased American innovation and culture to the world.
The U.S. Pavilion was designed by Davis Brody Bond. They collaborated with graphic designers Chermayeff and Geismar. Jack Masey and structural engineer David Geiger also contributed. The result was an unforgettable structure. From the outside, it appeared almost invisible. The interior, however, was a different story.
Imagine an enormous elliptical crater. It was covered by the largest clear-span air-supported cable roof ever built. The roof was made of translucent fiberglass. During the day, it filtered natural light. At night, it glowed. The fiberglass was lightweight. An internal force kept it in tension. A steel cable net provided support.
The interior space was created by digging a shallow hole. The edges were built up with excavated soil. This created 100,000 square feet of exhibit space. The space could accommodate up to 10,000 visitors per hour. The interior surface was lined with mirrored mylar. This created psychedelic reflections. It captured the groovy spirit of the era.
The pavilion housed seven major exhibits. These exhibits fell under the heading “Image of America.” One of the grooviest attractions was the Apollo 11 moon landing exhibit. It featured photos and artifacts. A real piece of moon rock was on display. Future Davis Brody Bond Partner Steven Davis hand-delivered it to the Expo.
The U.S. Pavilion’s roof spanned 262 by 460 feet. Cables were arranged in a diamond pattern. They were anchored to a concrete compression ring. The berm’s shallow slope reduced wind loading.
The Amerika-kan was more than just a building. It was a symbol of American ingenuity. It was a place where visitors could experience the “Image of America.” It left a lasting impression on all who visited. The Amerika-kan stands as a reminder of a time of innovation.
