Tucked away in a quiet residential street near Fukusumi Shrine, stands the Nurikobe Jizo Stele. This unassuming, one-meter-tall granite monument holds a fascinating story. It’s a place of healing, especially for those seeking relief from toothaches. The Nurikobe Jizo Stele is known throughout Japan for its association with toothache relief. Originally, this stele was located within the burial grounds of Saikyoji Temple. Over time, it migrated to its current location. The name “Nurikobe” translates to “smeared wall”, referring to its original placement within a plastered wall enclosure at the temple. It is believed that rubbing the stele with one’s hand, then touching the afflicted area, will bring relief from pain. Every year on June 4th, a special ceremony called “Mushi Kuyo” is held. This ceremony is performed by the local Fukusumi Shrine Preservation Society. During this event, prayers are offered for protection against toothaches and other ailments. Visitors, especially those from afar, can participate by sending votive strips of paper or small hand towels. These offerings are placed at the base of the stele. They serve as a testament to the widespread belief in its healing powers. The stele itself depicts Jizo, a bodhisattva known for protecting travelers and children. He stands holding a staff in his right hand and a jewel in his left. This image of Jizo offers comfort and hope to those seeking relief from their pain. So, as you stand before the Nurikobe Jizo Stele, take a moment to appreciate its quiet power. Reflect on the centuries of faith and hope it represents. Perhaps, if you have a toothache, try the traditional remedy. Touch the stele and see if the pain subsides.
