Whispers of history echo around the しんでいりばし Stele. It stands as a quiet observer, a testament to a time when boats plied the waters where roads now run. The しんでいりばし Stele, nestled near Osaka Station, marks a vanished bridge and canal, a forgotten piece of Osaka’s past. The very name, しんでいりばし, meaning “entrance bridge,” hints at its former function. It was a gateway, a point of connection between water and rail, vital to Osaka’s growth.

The しんでいりばし Stele stands as a reminder of the first Osaka Station, built in 1874. This original station was located 200 meters west of its current location. The station’s proximity to the canal and bridge, marked by the しんでいりばし Stele, played a crucial role in its location. In 1877, just three years after the station’s opening, a canal called the Meihan Iriguchi River was dug. It connected the former Sone Dote River to the station. This canal facilitated the transport of railway materials and goods, linking rail and water transport. During the Meiji period, railways were in their infancy, and water transport remained a crucial part of the logistics network. The original station even had a wharf and waterway access, as seen on an 1882 map of Osaka.

The area around the しんでいりばし Stele wasn’t always just about transport. The 1911 map reveals a cluster of schools near Osaka Station, a hub of education and culture. This was a designated educational district, home to institutions like the Prefectural Kitano Middle School, the Municipal Osaka Industrial School, and the Prefectural Umeda Higher Girls’ School. This area, now a site of knowledge creation and exchange, holds a surprising connection to its educational past. By the late Taisho era, most schools had relocated to accommodate the expanding railway yard. The Meihan Iriguchi River was filled in 1967 during the construction of the Hanshin Expressway, erasing another trace of the past.

The しんでいりばし Bridge itself was replaced in 1935, though it still stands. The Meihan Iriguchi River, however, disappeared. It was filled in during the construction of the Hanshin Expressway in 1967. The Hanshin Expressway’s Deiributors exit, built over the former riverbed, now marks the spot. This exit, with an average daily traffic count of over 100,000 vehicles, highlights the dramatic shift from water to road transport. The しんでいりばし Stele stands as a poignant marker. It represents a time when the flow of goods and people moved at a different pace, shaped by the gentle currents of a now-vanished canal.
