Prayers whispered hopes rise here at Gotebizo. This temple is in Osaka’s Kita district. Gotebizo is known for its unique origin story and its role as a protector.

Gotebizo’s story began in 1929. Workers were constructing the Sonezaki Police Station. They unearthed a statue of Jizo Bosatsu. Initially the workers saw it as a bad omen. Misfortunes plagued the construction site. People believed that the Jizo was disturbed. They said “O-Jizo-san ga gotete iru.” This means “The Jizo is sleeping”. This is how Gotebizo got its name. “Gotete” became “Gotebizo”.

The temple became a place of worship. It started to ward off evil. Around the same time, a plague spread in the Umeda area. Unexplained disasters occurred frequently. The head priest of Fudoji Temple declared something. He announced that a buried Jizo deity needed to be honored. Local volunteers searched for the statue. They enshrined it with reverence. Miraculously the disasters and the epidemic vanished.

Today Gotebizo stands south of the Sonezaki Police Station. It is known as a guardian. People come here for good fortune and disaster relief. The street where Gotebizo is located is called “Gotebizo-dori.” It stretches east to west. It connects from Midosuji to Sonezaki Ohatsutenjin-dori shopping street.

Gotebizo is easily accessible. It is a short walk from Higashi-Umeda Station on the Osaka Metro Tanimachi Line. It is about a one-minute walk away. Gotebizo continues to be a place of faith. It is loved by locals and visitors alike. It offers blessings and protection to all. This small temple has a big story. It reflects Osaka’s rich history. Its enduring faith makes it so special.
