“A sudden ambush!” I exclaim. That is the tale etched in stone before you at this very spot. We are standing before the stele marking the この付近 近藤 勇 遭難の地. It is a place of historical significance in Kyoto.

This stele commemorates the location where Kondo Isami, a commander of the Shinsengumi, was ambushed. The incident occurred in December 1867. The Shinsengumi were moving their base to Fushimi at the time. Kondo Isami was attacked by remnants of the Mimawarigumi.

Let’s step back in time to the chaotic era of the late Edo period. Kyoto was a hotbed of political intrigue. The Shinsengumi patrolled the streets. They were tasked with maintaining order. They were loyal to the Tokugawa shogunate. Kondo Isami was a central figure. He was known for his leadership and swordsmanship.

In 1867, the Shinsengumi shifted their headquarters to Fushimi. On December 18, Kondo Isami was returning from a meeting at Nijo Castle. He was traveling along what is now known as Honmachi street. This was once the Fushimi street. Suddenly, gunshots rang out.

A group of imperial loyalists ambushed Kondo. The attackers were hiding near the Seiwasso restaurant. A bullet struck Kondo’s left shoulder. It was a near-fatal blow. Despite the injury, Kondo managed to escape. He fled to the Fushimi奉行所.

Kondo Isami was later treated in Osaka Castle. He could not participate in the Battle of Toba-Fushimi due to his injury. Hijikata Toshizo led the Shinsengumi in his place.

The stele stands as a reminder of this event. It was erected in December 2009 by the Fushimi观光协会 and the Fushimi納税协会青年部. It marks a turning point in Kondo’s career and the Shinsengumi’s decline.

The location is near the Kiyo和荘 restaurant. It evokes a sense of history. It connects us to the past. Imagine the tension and uncertainty of that time. The Shinsengumi was at the height of its power. But forces were conspiring against them.

This stele is not just a marker. It represents a moment of vulnerability for a man known for his strength. It is a reminder that even the most powerful can fall victim to circumstance.

The Kondo Isami 遭難の地 Stele invites us to reflect on the complexities of history. It is a story of loyalty, betrayal, and the ever-changing tides of power. As you stand here, consider the weight of history and the echoes of the past that resonate even today.
