Kara-kuri Bridge. A name that echoes with the ingenuity of the past. Here in Neyagawa, the Kara-kuri Bridge stands as a testament to a time when innovation was key to survival. This isn’t just a bridge. It’s a story of how the people of this region wrestled with the elements and carved a life from the challenging landscape. The land around the Kibata area was notoriously low-lying. This made it vulnerable to flooding. To protect their homes and fields, the ingenious residents built “surrounding embankments”. These embankments acted as barriers against the encroaching waters. The Kara-kuri Bridge played a vital role in this intricate system of water management. Its sluice gate channeled excess water into the Neyagawa River. This river became a lifeline. It was not only essential for agriculture, but also served as a vital waterway for boat traffic. The outlet of this water system flowed from the Asashima district into the Neyagawa River. However, the low water level presented a persistent problem. Drainage was slow and inefficient. The solution? A sekimon, a water level control gate. This sekimon, designed to raise the water level on the Kibata side, became a symbol of human ingenuity in the face of natural challenges. Operating the sekimon was no easy feat. Initially, it required manual labor, a testament to the community’s dedication to their land. Later, the introduction of machinery revolutionized this process. This modernization was so significant that the term “machine” became associated with the bridge itself, giving rise to the name “Kara-kuri Bridge”, meaning “trick bridge”. The Kara-kuri Bridge is more than just a structure of wood and stone. It represents the ongoing relationship between humans and their environment. The water from the Niju irrigation system, drawn from the Neyagawa River, nourished the fields through a network of irrigation channels. The Kara-kuri Bridge, with its intricate system of water management, ensured that this life-giving flow reached the crops, shaping the landscape and sustaining the community.
