Deep within the verdant embrace of Imashiro-o-no-Hi Stele park, a profound sense of history washes over you. This isn’t just any park. This is the final resting place of Emperor Keitai, a figure shrouded in the mists of time, his life a tapestry woven with threads of legend and fact. The Imashiro-o-no-Hi Stele itself stands as a silent sentinel, a testament to the grandeur of a bygone era. Imashiro Tumulus, the focal point of this park, is one of the largest keyhole-shaped burial mounds in the Yodo River basin. Its sheer size is impressive, spanning 181 meters in length for the burial mound alone. Including the double moats surrounding it, the entire structure reaches an astounding 350 meters in length and 340 meters in width. Imashiro-o-no-Hi Stele park offers a rare opportunity to walk within the grounds of an imperial tomb. This experience is unique in Japan, a place where the veil between the past and present feels remarkably thin. While exploring the grounds of Imashiro-o-no-Hi Stele, you’ll encounter a remarkable sight: a reconstruction of a haniwa workshop, complete with over 190 meticulously crafted haniwa figures. These terracotta clay figures, ranging from humans and animals to houses and weapons, offer a glimpse into the burial practices and beliefs of ancient Japan. They populate the landscape, silently telling stories of the people who lived and died in this region centuries ago. Some are replicas you can even touch, bridging the gap between the modern visitor and the ancient craftsmen. Adjacent to the park lies the Imashiro Ancient Burial History Museum. Here, artifacts excavated from the three surrounding burial mounds are displayed.
