A symphony of whispers echoes from the past. This is Chulalongkorn University’s Architecture Faculty. Established in 1930 it stands as a testament to architectural evolution. Its story is a captivating blend of tradition and modernity.
The faculty’s initial design was a harmonious fusion of Beaux-Arts and Siamese styles. British architect Edward Healey masterminded this early vision. Healey’s influence shaped the very foundation of this architectural haven. However the faculty soon outgrew its original home.
A relocation became necessary. In 1940 the faculty moved to its present location. Lucien Coppée and Siwawong Kunchon na Ayudhya designed the new building. Their design reflects a new era of architectural thinking. The building’s design reflects a blend of modern and traditional aesthetics.
Adjacent to the Architecture Faculty is the Chemistry Building. Today it serves as an Arts and Cultural Centre. Architect Saroj Sukkhayang designed it. He incorporated European design elements into a Thai context. Sukkhayang also designed the Arts Auditorium. This building exemplifies his innovative approach to Thai architecture. He used modern materials like concrete. He incorporated traditional motifs into the concrete designs. This created a durable building. The concrete ornamentation however lacks the intricacy of traditional wood carving.
Another building on campus the student clubhouse also bears Sukkhayang’s mark. He collaborated with Chuea Patthamachinda on this project. The clubhouse underwent recent renovations. It lost some of its original features. This highlights the challenges of preserving historical architecture while adapting to modern needs.
The Student Union Building is a more recent addition to the campus. Designed by Vodhyakarn Varavan and Lert Urasayananda in 1966 this building shows another stage in the evolution of the university’s architecture. The structure features distinctive spikey louvred gables.
Chulalongkorn University’s Architecture Faculty. It has witnessed significant changes. It is a living testament to architectural innovation. It shows the impact of different styles. It reflects the country’s rich history and progressive spirit. The buildings stand tall as symbols of Thailand’s architectural heritage. They continue to inspire architects and students alike.
