Was it fate, or simply circumstance, that elevated Somdet Chao Phraya Borom Maha Sri Suriyawongse to such prominence? We are now at a place forever connected to this influential figure. Somdet Chao Phraya Borom Maha Sri Suriyawongse, also known as Chuang Bunnag, was born in 1808. He became a prominent figure in 19th-century Thailand. He even served as regent during King Chulalongkorn’s early years.

Somdet Chao Phraya’s family had Persian roots. His ancestors served King Prasat Thong. By the 18th century, they had embraced Theravada Buddhism. His father, Tish Bunnag, was a Minister of Trade. This exposed young Chuang to global commerce and Western ideas.

He started as a royal page around 1828. Somdet Chao Phraya received a traditional education at Wat Pho. His knowledge of English set him apart. He was also passionate about shipbuilding. In 1835, he built the “Ariel” in Chantaburi. It was Siam’s first Western-rigged ship. He presented it to King Rama III.

Somdet Chao Phraya’s career continued to rise. He became close to Prince Isaret Rangsan. Together, they shared an interest in shipbuilding and Western culture. He eventually became the Minister of Southern Siam. Somdet Chao Phraya also commanded the Royal Navy.

His diplomatic skills were crucial. He helped negotiate the Bowring Treaty with the British. This treaty opened Siam to free trade. It ended the royal monopoly on Western trade that had been in place for 400 years.

King Mongkut recognized his abilities. In 1860, he commissioned Somdet Chao Phraya to construct Phra Nakhon Khiri. It would serve as a detached palace in Phetchaburi. He also oversaw the construction of the Damnoen Saduak Canal. This facilitated travel in western Siam.

Following King Mongkut’s death in 1868 Somdet Chao Phraya became regent. He ruled while the new King Chulalongkorn was still young. His power during this time was immense.

Upon his retirement in 1873 he received the highest rank ever bestowed. It was a Siamese noble during the Rattanakosin period. Somdet Chao Phraya then retreated to his estate in Ratchaburi.

Somdet Chao Phraya passed away in 1883. He died en route to Bangkok for treatment. His funeral was held with royal honors. Today, we remember Somdet Chao Phraya Borom Maha Sri Suriyawongse. He was a skilled diplomat a naval commander and a powerful regent. He left an indelible mark on Thailand’s history.
