Did the air always carry such weight? Sommot Amon Mak Bridge. A name that whispers of immortality, of kings and ghosts. Look around you. This bridge, spanning the khlong, connects not just two districts of Bangkok, but also two worlds. The bustling Bamrung Mueang Road hums with life, while just behind us, the whispers of Pratu Phi, the Ghost Gate, linger. Sommot Amon Mak Bridge is one of Bangkok’s Saphan Lek, iron bridges. Originally, this bridge was made of steel. It could even be moved to allow boats to pass. Imagine that, a bridge that dances aside for river traffic. The name “Saphan Lek Pratu Phi”, Iron Bridge at Ghost Gate, came from this very spot. In the early Rattanakosin period, Pratu Phi was where the dead were carried out of the city, a westward journey believed to be the direction of the departed. Sommot Amon Mak Bridge has seen its share of transformations. King Chulalongkorn, Rama V, commissioned its reconstruction from a deteriorating iron structure to the concrete bridge you see today. The elegant Ionic banisters hint at its royal connection. This bridge stands as a monument to Prince Sawasdiprawat. Its name, Sommot Amon Mak, “way of who assume as immortal,” honors the divine king. Now, glance towards the Pom Prap Sattru Phai side. See that intersection? It’s called Men Pun Intersection, a name that translates to “cement crematorium intersection.” This area, near Wat Saket, holds a darker history. During the reigns of Rama II and Rama III, cholera ravaged Bangkok. So many died that Wat Saket, and a nearby cement crematorium, couldn’t handle the sheer volume. Bodies lay uncremated, a grim feast for vultures. The crematorium is gone, but the name Men Pun, a chilling reminder, remains. Sommot Amon Mak Bridge. It carries us over the khlong and across centuries, a silent witness to life, death, and the enduring spirit of Bangkok.
