Why is this bridge called the “Lower Steel Bridge”? The Phitthaya Sathian Bridge is a historic bridge in Bangkok’s Talat Noi sub-district. It gracefully arches over the Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem. This bridge is more than just a way to cross the water. It’s a symbol of Bangkok’s transformation. The bridge was originally built during the reign of King Mongkut. It was a marvel of engineering at the time. It was made of steel and could be separated to allow boats to pass. This is why it became known as the “Lower Steel Bridge”. The nearby Damrong Sathit Bridge was called the “Upper Steel Bridge”. King Chulalongkorn later ordered the bridge to be restored. Work was completed in 1900. It was given the official name Phitthaya Sathian Bridge in honor of Prince Sonabandit. He was the owner of the nearby Wang Talat Noi Palace. During the reign of King Vajiravudh, the bridge underwent another restoration. This gave it the look you see today. It’s built with reinforced cement in a beautiful Venetian Gothic style. Pay close attention to the exquisite decorations on the balustrades and the eight lampposts. You’ll also notice the lion head sculptures at each end. The Phitthaya Sathian Bridge was recognized as an ancient monument in 1975 by the Fine Arts Department. Next time you cross a bridge, take a moment to appreciate its history and the stories it holds.
