Gazing upon this bustling crossroads, can you sense the echoes of history beneath the modern cityscape? This, my friends, is the Ratchathewi Intersection. It’s a vital artery in Bangkok’s heart, where Phaya Thai and Phetchaburi roads converge. Ratchathewi Intersection carries a name that whispers tales of royalty and generosity. It honors Queen Sukhumala Marasri, a royal consort of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). In 1911, she financed a bridge over the Khlong Pra Chae Chin canal. King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) inaugurated the bridge, officially naming it “Phra Ratchathewi Bridge.” People commonly referred to it as “Ratchathewi Bridge.” The bridge and canal eventually vanished to make way for a roundabout, a symbol of progress and changing times. Imagine a grand fountain, encircled by roses, illuminated by spotlights, transforming Ratchathewi into a dazzling spectacle. This area was once a prestigious neighborhood, home to affluent families and nobility. As Bangkok continued to evolve, so did Ratchathewi. In 1964, the roundabout was replaced by the intersection we see today. The fountain, fragmented into four smaller ones, still graces each corner. By the 1970s, Ratchathewi Intersection had blossomed into a vibrant shopping district, a magnet for cinephiles with cinemas like Athens, Mackenna, Hollywood, President, Paramount, Metro, and Indra. Beauty parlors flourished, adding to the area’s allure. An overpass, completed in 1979, marked another milestone. It was Bangkok’s first overpass at an intersection, a testament to the city’s growing infrastructure needs. Dozens of rock-laden trucks were parked on it, a dramatic test of its strength. This overpass met its end in January 2025, making way for the MRT Orange Line, a symbol of Bangkok’s relentless pursuit of modernization. Ratchathewi’s influence extended beyond its physical boundaries. In 1989, during Bangkok’s re-zoning, the area was separated from Phaya Thai district. The name “Ratchathewi” was then bestowed upon the new district, a tribute to the intersection’s enduring significance. So, as you stand at Ratchathewi Intersection, remember the layers of history beneath your feet. From a royal bridge to a bustling roundabout, a cinema hub to a modern intersection, Ratchathewi has witnessed Bangkok’s transformation.
