“Did those Burmese troops really leave after sacking Ayutthaya?” Right here, in the shadow of Wat Arun, stands the ศาลสมเด็จพระเจ้าตากสินมหาราช, a tribute to the man who dared to dream of a unified Siam after that devastating fall. King Taksin, his name a blend of title and given name, knew Ayutthaya was too vulnerable. So he chose Thonburi, closer to the sea, easily fortified. Imagine a young king, just 34, crowned at Thonburi Palace in 1767. He was a warrior king, leading from the front, uniting a fractured land. He faced rivals in Phimai, Phitsanulok, even Nakhon Si Thammarat. But Taksin, a strategic leader, consolidated his power, even as Burmese armies threatened. He drove them back at Bang Kung in 1767. Then came Thado Mindin, the Burmese governor of Chiang Mai, attacking Sawankhalok in 1770. Taksin’s forces, led by the brilliant Phraya Surasi, repelled the attack. But the north remained a thorn in Taksin’s side. Chiang Mai, a Burmese stronghold, constantly threatened incursions. Twice, in 1770 and 1771, Taksin attempted to capture Chiang Mai. Twice, he was rebuffed. But in 1774, his persistence paid off. Chiang Mai fell, ending over 200 years of Burmese rule. He wasn’t just a warrior king. He was also a king who cared for his people. He understood the hardship, the scarcity. Using his own funds, he stabilized rice prices, attracting foreign traders, ensuring his people had food and clothing. Trade flourished. Relations with China, once rocky due to suspicions of Taksin’s lineage, solidified with official recognition in 1772. But the strain of constant warfare and internal strife took its toll. By 1781, whispers of King Taksin’s erratic behavior spread. He declared himself a future Buddha, demanded worship, and harshly punished dissent. A coup, swift and decisive, led by Phraya San, dethroned Taksin. He requested to enter the monkhood at Wat Arun, but the turmoil ignited by the coup demanded a strong hand. General Chao Phraya Chakri, Taksin’s trusted general, returned from Cambodia, quelled the unrest, and ultimately, according to official chronicles, ordered Taksin’s execution. Taksin’s story is a reminder that even in times of chaos, a leader with vision and courage can rise, unite a shattered land, and lay the foundation for a new era.
