The Wat Phra That Chedi Luang Nat Sapheu, also known as “Elephant-Propped Temple”, is quite a sight. This temple earned its nickname because of its unusual chedi, a structure that resembles a large, square pagoda. This square design is a rarity in Thailand. Most chedis are bell-shaped. The chedi of Wat Phra That Chedi Luang Nat Sapheu dates back about 60 years. It’s a relatively young structure in a city steeped in ancient history. What makes this chedi so fascinating are the elephant sculptures that appear to support its weight. These elephant figures, carved from concrete, stand at attention around the chedi’s base. Each elephant faces outward, as if guarding the temple’s sacred grounds. The chedi itself is adorned with intricate carvings.
