Have you ever glimpsed a place where the spirit of learning and the legacy of royalty blend together? The Princess Srisavangavadhana College of Medicine, or PSCM, is just such a place. It stands as a testament to the visionary spirit of Princess Chulabhorn, a woman who dedicated her life to the advancement of healthcare in Thailand.
PSCM, nestled in the heart of Bangkok, opened its doors in 2016. But the story of this medical school starts much earlier, with the Chulabhorn Foundation and its mission to bolster the country’s medical workforce. Back in 2015, Princess Chulabhorn, a renowned scientist and a leading figure in the medical field, spearheaded the establishment of a College of Medicine and Public Health under the Chulabhorn Foundation.
The foundation had already been running a renowned hospital, Chulabhorn Hospital, dedicated to research and treatment of ailments, particularly those linked to HIV and cancer. Princess Chulabhorn’s ambition was to create a medical school that would contribute to Thailand’s growing health challenges. This spurred the creation of what was originally known as HRH Princess Chulabhorn College of Medical Science.
The college started offering undergraduate courses in medicine, nursing, health science technology and veterinary medicine. However, in 2017, ownership and administration of the institution was transferred to the Chulabhorn Royal Academy. Then in 2021, a significant shift occurred. King Vajiralongkorn bestowed a new title, “Princess Srisavangavadhana,” upon his sister, Princess Chulabhorn. This momentous event led to the renaming of the college to “Princess Srisavangavadhana College of Medicine.”
PSCM truly embraces a global approach. The college has partnered with prominent institutions like University College London (UCL) and the University of Newcastle in Australia. This collaboration allows students to earn an international B.Sc. degree in their fourth year and opens doors to a wider range of healthcare possibilities.
Today, PSCM remains steadfast in its commitment to nurturing future medical professionals and contributing to the advancement of healthcare in Thailand and beyond.
