Have you ever wondered about the legacy of the first railway in Thailand? Right here, where we stand, is a place steeped in history, the Paknam Railway, the first of its kind, where the wheels of progress first turned in 1893. Although it might be gone now, it’s worth noting because it opened up a whole new dimension of travel, and we’re going to learn about its incredible story.

The Paknam Railway, a narrow gauge line stretching 21 kilometers, was built by the Paknam Railway Company, established by a British navigator and a Danish naval commander. It was a marvel of engineering for its time, and its opening ceremony was graced by King Rama V himself. He actually invested half of the funding that was required for the construction.

Did you know the Paknam Railway was initially a financial success? Trains ran in both directions daily and it even became a popular place for tourists. In fact, it was even electrified in 1926. But times change, and when the bus companies emerged and fuel shortages hit during World War II, it put a strain on the railway. The Paknam Railway was closed in 1959, replaced by what you see today, the Rama IV Road.

Just imagine the hum of those steam engines, the clatter of the train wheels over the tracks, and the bustling energy of passengers boarding and disembarking. Feel the wind in your hair as you race along the tracks. The Paknam Railway, though gone, will forever remain a significant part of Thailand’s history, a reminder of the nation’s early steps towards modernity.
