Do you know the story of the giant swing? It is a fascinating sight with a history entwined with the soul of Bangkok. You stand here at the edge of the Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn, on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, and see the towering structure that was once not only a swing but a ritualistic and spiritual experience for the Thais. Built during the Ayutthaya era, the swing stood within the temple grounds. The swing was a symbol of the mythical Garuda, the half-man, half-bird creature, considered the mount of Vishnu in Hindu mythology.

The swing, a grand spectacle, represented the Hindu tradition of the Garuda worshipping Vishnu. The swing was a towering structure of wood supported by poles with ropes stretching up to a height reaching the temple’s roof. During a grand festival in the 18th century, the swing was used in an elaborate ritual where men would swing up to the temple roof. The men held onto a horizontal bar, their feet tied, and, with great momentum, they swayed up high, a symbol of rebirth. The swing’s grandeur can only be imagined today, as it was dismantled in 1920, symbolizing the changing times that Bangkok was experiencing.

The legend states that the swing was used to show the bravery of the King’s warriors, who would be able to swing to the top of the temple roof and drop down. Perhaps we will never truly know its true purpose, but we can appreciate its symbolism, a testament to the connection between the spiritual and the earthly. It’s a reminder of the rituals that once took place in Bangkok, where the mundane world intertwined with the otherworldly. The giant swing may be only in our imaginations today, but the story of its sway still captivates the hearts of many visiting this magnificent temple.
