“The wise control themselves,” a student quoted, rushing past with a pile of books. “That’s the motto, right?” We’re standing right in front of the impressive gates of Chiang Mai University, or CMU as it’s often called. This esteemed institution, founded in 1964, was actually the very first higher education facility in all of northern Thailand. Imagine the buzz and excitement when it first opened its doors! CMU is a sprawling campus, with a fascinating history woven into its very fabric. The main campus, known as Suan Sak, is where we are right now. Did you know that in the 1960s, this entire area was covered in forest? Thankfully, the university’s founders had a deep respect for nature. Instead of clearing the land, they carefully constructed the buildings around the existing trees. That’s why today, even with its impressive growth, CMU retains that tranquil, green atmosphere.
