This is Masjid al-Haram the Grand Mosque of Mecca. It is the most significant mosque in Islam. It surrounds the Kaaba the most sacred site in Islam. Every Muslim strives to visit this place at least once in their life. Millions make the pilgrimage each year for Hajj and Umrah.
The history of Masjid al-Haram stretches back centuries. Islamic tradition credits Abraham and his son Ishmael with building the Kaaba. This makes it possibly the oldest mosque. Some scholars contest this claim. They point to other early mosques in Medina and Eritrea. Regardless the mosque’s origins are ancient. Its significance is undeniable.
After Muhammad’s return to Mecca in 630 CE the Kaaba was cleansed of idols. Monotheistic rule began. This marked a pivotal moment. The mosque’s importance solidified. The need for expansion began.

The expansions were necessary to accommodate the increasing number of pilgrims. Sadly this progress also caused controversy. The demolition of ancient buildings near the mosque sparked debate.
