The King Abdullah Mosque didn’t always exist in its current form. Its story begins not with grand plans but with a simple need. In 2003 a restaurant opened on the 77th floor of the Kingdom Centre. As the restaurant’s popularity grew so did the number of customers. The absence of a mosque nearby created a need.
Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdulaziz saw this need. He established a small mosque as an annex to the restaurant. Prince Al Waleed bin Talal generously funded its construction. This initial mosque was a modest space. It served the growing number of worshippers. It provided a quiet sanctuary high above the bustling city.
Then in 2005 Crown Prince Abdullah ascended the throne. He became King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz. The little mosque was renamed in his honour. It became the King Abdullah Mosque. It’s now a symbol of his reign and his commitment to faith.
The mosque boasts a remarkable distinction. It holds the Guinness World Record. It’s the highest mosque in the world. Situated 183 metres above ground level it offers a breathtaking view of Riyadh. The mosque itself is relatively small covering only 110 square metres. It can accommodate 200 men in the main prayer hall. A mezzanine level provides space for 100 women.
The design is a fascinating mix of traditional and modern elements. The exterior features an abstracted Arabic pattern. This pattern plays with light and shadow throughout the day. At night the mosque glows like a lantern. The interior showcases a modern interpretation of a mashrabiya. This traditional screen wall filters light beautifully.
