“Is this where Ali al-Rida prayed?” someone whispers. We stand before Masjid Ali Reda Allah Al Sahli in Medina. It is a place that connects us to a pivotal figure in Shia Islam.

Ali al-Rida also known as Abu al-Hasan al-Thani was the eighth Imam in Twelver Shia Islam. He was a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad. Ali al-Rida was known for his wisdom. He was also known for his piety.

Born in Medina around 766 CE Ali al-Rida’s life spanned a politically charged era. This era included the reigns of Abbasid caliphs such as Harun al-Rashid. Later, it included al-Amin and al-Ma’mun.

His father Musa al-Kazim was the seventh Imam. Ali al-Rida became his successor. This happened according to his father’s will.

A significant moment arose when al-Mamun invited Ali al-Rida to Marv. Al-Mamun designated him as his heir apparent. This decision was an attempt to reconcile with the Shia population. It was also to quell frequent Shia revolts. Al-Rida accepted this offer. He had the condition that he would not interfere in governmental affairs.

The appointment of Ali al-Rida stirred strong opposition. This was particularly among the Abbasids. They revolted. They installed Ibrahim al-Mubarak as the anti-caliph in Baghdad.

Realizing the depth of the Iraqi opposition al-Mamun decided to move to Baghdad. He accompanied al-Rida. However Ali al-Rida died mysteriously. This happened when the party reached Tus in 818. Some believe he was poisoned.

Ali al-Rida is buried in Mashhad Iran. A large shrine marks the spot. Millions of Shia Muslims visit annually. They come for pilgrimage.

Ali al-Rida’s life was filled with both spiritual leadership and political intrigue. He left behind a legacy of knowledge. He also left behind a devotion to Islam.

Here at Masjid Ali Reda Allah Al Sahli we reflect on his teachings. We remember his commitment to his faith. We contemplate his role in Islamic history. His story continues to inspire. It echoes through the centuries.
