What if I told you that the seeds of a financial empire were sown selling children’s toys and snacks? Here, at the Masjid Abdullah Kamal in Mecca, that story takes root. The mosque isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a quiet testament to the life of Saleh Abdullah Kamel, a man whose journey began humbly in the streets of Mecca and reached the heights of global finance. Born in Mecca in 1941, Saleh Kamel, the mosque’s namesake, had an early knack for commerce. He honed his skills selling Baleela and toys to other children. He even capitalized on the Hajj season, working as a Tawafa, guiding pilgrims, saving his earnings for future ventures. This entrepreneurial spirit carried him from these humble beginnings to King Saud University, where he earned a degree in commerce in 1963. From there, he served at the Ministry of Finance for a decade. This experience proved invaluable. It laid the groundwork for the Dallah Establishment, the precursor to his Dallah Albaraka Group, a vast conglomerate spanning finance, healthcare, real estate, and more. Kamel became known as a pioneer of Islamic finance, a title cemented by Malaysia’s Royal Award for Islamic Finance in 2010. He chaired the General Council for Islamic Banks. He even envisioned Jeddah transforming into a major international port. Masjid Abdullah Kamal is more than just a mosque. It reflects Kamel’s dedication to his birthplace. It whispers of a man who never forgot his roots, even as he navigated the world of international finance. He even advocated for the proper use of Zakat, Islamic alms-giving, believing it held the key to solving economic and social issues. Kamel believed the vast sum of Zakat, estimated at SR 1 trillion in the Kingdom, held untapped potential for positive change. This mosque serves as a tangible reminder of his vision. It stands as a symbol of his commitment to his faith and his community, alongside his contributions to global Islamic finance.
